WCWSPR26176 How to see Fibonacci in Nature

Blurb:

This enrichment resource brings Science and maths to life with an engaging presentation on Fibonacci in Nature. Following on from the ‘Introduction to Numbers in Nature’ previously hosted, Lisa will refresh and build on this understanding of geometry in nature to visualise the Fibonacci sequence in natural forms. This dynamic resource demonstrates how the Fibonacci number sequence transforms from an abstract topic to a visual learning experience, helping pupils recognise how patterns studied in class appear throughout the natural world. This is a supplement to Algebra and Number strands for the Irish Primary Maths Curriculum stages 3 and 4. Also combining cross curricular links with SESE Living Things strand which includes Life Processes, Plants and Animals. Stage 3 and 4 Learning outcomes include: Identifying the rules of a sequence; Representing relationships between quantities; Exploring patterns using various maths languages; Representing maths structures in different ways. This resource stands out for its strong emphasis on artistic visual activities. Introducing ways to draw and build a fibonacci spiral puzzle and create plant spiralling patterns. Encouraging learners to see and model mathematical patterns as well as calculate them.

Date:

Tuesday 24th March – 7.00pm to 8.00pm

Presenter:

Lisa Lillywhite- The Smart Happy Project

Lisa founded The Smart Happy Project to share the wonders of natural shapes and patterns. Following a design career in London, She turned her designer’s eye to see the patterns and symmetries within nature. Hedgerows and seashores became the field study of seeing geometries in nature that matched those with the numbers her children learnt in classrooms. Through thesmarthappyproject.com Lisa shares her understanding of shapes and numbers in nature. She offers activities and publications with her online following and is currently a resident artist in Cork schools through the TAP+ partnership program bringing art and nature to lively classrooms in the city.
